860 on the Wye Wall-Raising
Vicky Culman
Local, state, and federal dignitaries joined HASLO on May 31, 2016, for a Wall-Raising celebration for 860 on the Wye, HASLO's new permanent housing for veterans. One half of the apartments will be reserved for veterans that have been homeless. 860 on the Wye is the first development of its kind in San Luis Obispo County. In addition to 20 new apartments, 860 on the Wye will include 1,900 square feet of indoor education/recreation space, a 3,000 square foot neighborhood community garden, and on-site resident services provided by the U.S. Veteran's Administration. Through the use of on-site solar technology the project will re-generate at least one half of all energy consumed by the development.
HASLO was also honored by the presence of the Marine Color Guard Detachment 680, local veterans, and numerous community groups who also came to support the project.
The name 860 on the Wye relates to the project's location at 860 Humbert Avenue, the site of a historic railroad wye, or junction.
